Operating under the direction of Rise Up, a non-profit foundation, and started with profits from the first Uke U, “Ukes for Youth” currently has 6 sets of ukuleles which are loaned on a rotating basis to schools and youth programs in Central Oregon. A number of schools in the area have also purchased their own sets for their students, so now over 3000 young people are getting to know the joy of playing ukuleles each year.
A portion of the proceeds from Uke U benefits the Ukes for Youth program. Ukuleles are purchased for local elementary schools and BUGs members come to play for the students and talk about the ukuleles. In addition to purchasing ukuleles, Ukes for Youth also provides opportunities for area music teachers to become more involved and proficient on the ukulele and can provide instructors for programs that do not have their own music teachers.
If you are interested in making a donation to the Ukes for Youth program, you can do so by contacting us here. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated, and 100% of all donations to Ukes for Youth go directly to support the program.
FYI: A ukulele of good quality costs us about $50.00 to purchase, thanks to the generosity of our local sponsors, and an hour of instruction also costs about $50.00.
Uke U will feature workshops and performance opportunities specifically for young people. Uke U also offers special prices for admission, and has full and partial scholarships enabling every young person an opportunity to attend Uke U. If you know of a student in need of assistance, contact us here.
